Healthy Honey Mustard Salmon Recipe
Below: This healthy salmon recipe is easy to make and has a delicious homemade honey mustard glaze that gives it even more flavor.
The recipe I am going to share today is great for an easy weeknight dinner because it only has a few simple ingredients and doesn’t take long at all to cook. It has a flavorful honey mustard sauce as well which gives it so much flavor to add to the already juicy salmon.
Why is salmon good for you?
Omegas are essential to a successful anti-inflammatory diet, since they can help reduce inflammation that comes from chronic illnesses like diabetes, arthritis, and lupus to mention a few.
Specifically, omegas 3, 6, and 9 have been shown to help prevent heart disease and strokes, improve blood circulation, maintain healthy cholesterol levles, and even help control eczema. That is why it is important to include them in your diet, even if you don’t have a chronic illness.
Salmon is one of the healthiest types of fish and the best way to incorporate omegas in your diet. It is best if you can use fresh salmon that is wild caught to ensure that they are as clean as possible. You should be able to tell when you are shopping very easily if the salmon is farm raised or wild caught.
Another benefit of this tasty fish is that it is very filling. You really only need 5-8 ounces of salmon fillets to feel satisfied and you can cook it in a matter of minutes so it is great. If you are on a low calorie diet, this is important since you won’t eat as much, but you will still feel full and get the health benefits
How do you cook salmon?
Salmon is a very versatile ingredient, and it is easy to make. You will want to make sure that you do not overcook it though, because dry salmon is definitely not as good as tender salmon. You can achieve the right texture and level of doneness by cooking it for about 3-5 minutes on each side.
You can make salmon as a main dish for dinner, lunch, or even for breakfast if you serve it with avocado on a piece of toast!
It is a great dish to serve with vegetables too. You can serve the veggies on the side, or you can pull the cooked salmon apart and add it to a salad. In this occasion, I served it with a tasty steamed broccoli, and it was a perfect pairing to go along with the sweet honey mustard mixture. It also goes great with green beans or another vegetable.
Another great option is to serve it with quinoa, which is a great substitute for rice which is harder on the body to digest and which I have tried to eliminate from my diet as much as possible.
How do you make honey mustard salmon?
My favorite salmon recipe only needs a few ingredients besides the salmon filet, salt, and pepper. Those ingredients are the following:
- 2 tablespoons of dijon mustard
- 3 teaspoons of honey
- Water, the amount will vary depending on how thick or thin you want it.
- Onion slices
There are two options for making this recipe. The first is to cook the honey mustard sauce together with the fillet which will result in a lighter mustard flavor. The other option is to cook the salmon separately and then make the sauce and serve it over the top or on the side. Either option is great and you won’t be disappointed!
Start by seasoning the salmon with black pepper and salt. Then, place it skin side down with a small amount of olive oil or avocado oil in a hot pan over medium heat. Add the onion slices and cook on each side for about 3-5 minutes. The cooking time may vary a little bit depending on the thickness of your salmon. It should turn a lighter pink, but not too much or it will dry out.
Now you will need to decide if you want to cook the honey mustard sauce with the salmon or make it separately. In either case, you will add the dijon mustard, honey, and water to a small bowl and mix well. If you are going to cook it with the salmon, add it to the pan and cook for an additional 3 minutes.
If you are going to serve it on the side, just wait until the salmon has reached flaky perfection and put it on a plate, serving the honey mustar sauce on top of the salmon or on the side.
To add a little bit of zing, you can add some lemon juice too if you would like or simply serve each plate with a small lemon wedge. This is any easy recipe that the whole family will enjoy. Let me know in the comments below how it turns out.
