The Best Healthy Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries Recipe
Below: Check out this healthy oven baked sweet potato fries recipe, which is a healthier alternative to regular fries.
Sweet potato fries, as the name suggests, are made with sweet potatoes, which are known for their slightly sweet flavor. This makes them perfect for a variety of recipes, which can be savory or sweet. Some of those include cakes, pies, and muffins, but of course, sweet potato fries also.
One of my favorite recipes that we always have on Thanksgiving is sweet potato casserole, which has sweet potatoes, butters, brown sugar, and marshmallows melted on top. As you can imagine, that recipe not only has a lot of calories, but it also is not ideal for an anti-inflammatory diet because of the amount of sugar it contains, so it is something I have had to stop eating.
With that said, I have found new ways to enjoy this delicious ingredients, which on its own is healthy and a great source of carbs for your anti-inflammatory diet. These homemade sweet potato fries are the first recipe in a series of recipes using this single ingredients, so stay tuned for more!
What are some anti-inflammatory benefits of sweet potatoes?
Sweet potatoes are a great source of carbohydrates, which is a macronutrient that is important for our health. The bad thing is that most people consume a lot of refined carbs which have high amounts of sugar and refined flours, such as bread, cakes, donuts, and more.
If you are following an anti-inflammatory diet, then you know to avoid those types of foods, so it is important to find a healthy alternative. Sweet potatoes are a perfect option.
Sweet potatoes have a lot of potassium, but they also have fiber which helps us maintain water in our bodies to keep us hydrated longer.
It also has high levels of vitamin c and beta carotene which is a good way to reduce inflammation. Sweet potatoes, although sweet, has low levels of sugar which won’t generally raise insulin levels significantly, making it ideal for people with diabetes. Finally, it also is a great source of natural energy for our bodies.
How do you make oven baked, crispy sweet potato fries?
Just like regular potatoes, the sweet potato is a starch that you can use to make some good fries. Even though we call these “fries,” for this version, we will be making them on a baking sheet in the oven to lower the fat levels. In short, whether they are fried in oil or made in the oven, this recipe has the same name.
Today I want to show you how to make two versions of these crispy fries with different seasonings. The first version makes for a perfect side dish for a savory dish like these fish tacos, and the second can be served as a dessert since they will be flavored with cinnamon. The way to make them is the same, but the seasoning will be different.
Some of the spices that I like to use that are also helpful to reduce inflammation are ginger and turmeric. To find out more about the health benefits of ginger, follow this link.
To start, you will take one large sweet potato and cut it into thick or thin strips on a large cutting board. If you want thin fries, obviously you will cut it into thin strips, and if you want thick fries, they should be thicker. If you prefer, you can also make them into round potato slices which look more like potato chips.
The important thing is to cut them into uniform sizes so that they are done around the same time. Since I am making two versions today (savory and sweet), I did both and put them in separate bowls.
For the savory homemade fries, I put the fries in a medium bowl and added 1/4 teaspoon of paprika, salt, black pepper, turmeric powder, dry oregano, and cayenne pepper. Then, I added a tablespoon of coconut oil (you can use olive oil instead) and mixed them together so each fry was seasoned.
For the sweet version, I added the potato slices to another bowl and add 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, ground ginger, turmeric powder, and coconut sugar. I also added the coconut oil and mix well.
The next step is to add the seasoned sweet potatoes in a single layer to a prepared sheet pan, baking in the oven at 400 degrees fahrenheit for 15 minutes. The cook time may vary depending on how thick you cut your fries. For best results, you will want these to be crispy. However, don’t let them burn, because that can ruin the flavors in a hurry.
Another way to prepare this easy recipe is by adding them to an air fryer basket and cooking them in your air fryer if you have one.
Whether you are making these as a quick snack or as a main dish, these savory flavors will be a hit and I know you will enjoy these healthier fries, which are just as good as regular fries. The simple ingredients make this a perfect option to make whenever you are craving something tasty and don’t have a lot of time.
